The Neue Schule Waterford Balding Gag is often sourced for strong horses with a tendency to set themselves or pull down. A deterrent for horses that grab the bit and go.
The combination of this mouthpiece and the gag action (lift within the mouth) of the cheeks makes it virtually impossible for them to grab the bit. Also as the Waterford bends in every direction it usually suits all types of mouth conformation, including big fat tongues, plus this slimmer innovative Waterford mouthpiece features a lip shelf which eradicates the previously common problem of rubs.
The loose ring is more flexible, discouraging the horse from leaning, which may happen with the fixed cheek. Two reins allow the rider to differentiate between the snaffle action and the gag action (lift within the mouth). However, many riders only employ the gag rein which maximises on control and lift from the shoulder.
Use either in conjunction with rolled leather cheeks, which are more aesthetically pleasing and softer in their action, or the rope cheeks that have a sharper action as they slip back and forth through the cheeks more quickly.
The Secret of the Salox? is the high thermal conductivity. This basically means that the mouthpiece of the bit warms up to about 30oC within the first few fractions of a second, whilst a stainless steel bit takes over 7 seconds. Again, when the bit moves in the mouth as the rein aids are applied the mouthpiece quickly adjusts to the new temperature. In essence, therefore the rein aids are more definitive because the bit no longer feels like a foreign body in the mouth. This equals a more relaxed acceptance of the bit. Horses that have previously been inwardly fixated on the bit and/or overactive have proven to be attentive and responsive to the aids provided by the Salox bits.
